How To Wear Brown This Fall & Winter
*Updated September 2024* Dark brown is one of fashion’s favorite colors this fall and winter. Whether you call it chocolate, mocha, walnut, coffee, or expresso, this rich color is flattering to most skin tones. While black can be too harsh and gray makes us look washed out, dark brown tends to be flattering to more skin tones.

If you tend to suit warmer colors, choose a brown with hints of orange. If you look better in cooler colors, look for a very deep brown with hints of black. Here are some beautiful dark brown fashion pieces available right now, and how to wear them this fall and winter…
Colors To Wear With Dark Brown
For high-contrast combinations, pair dark brown with cream, blush, lavender, or light green. Denim, navy and gray look beautiful with dark brown. Want a traditional fall look? Wear orange, olive, or tan with dark brown. But if you want to stand out, try hot pink, red, or teal.

Dark Brown With Neutrals
The easiest combinations to pull together are dark brown with other neutrals like white, cream, gray, and beige. If you consider blush and leopard print neutrals too, then those work too! My skirt is an old style, but this Corduroy Mini Skirt is currently available. My ballet flats are available in s dark Chocolate Raisin color as well as a Soft Mahogany suede.

Is it still warm in the fall where you are? Take a look at this lightweight brown and cream printed dress in Cedar or this long-sleeved version in Brown Motif.
Dark Brown With Blues
Dark brown and blue are on the opposite end of the color spectrum, so they complement one another really well. Try brown with denim, of course, but try light blue, periwinkle, or other soft shades of blue.

Dark Brown With Orange, Red, Or Burgundy
Dark brown also pairs well with the red family including orange, pink, and burgundy. I’m wearing a tan and dark brown patterned blazer with a burgundy turtle neck top. Mine is sold out but this one in Red Delicious is similar.

Great post, with lots of ideas! I’ve always loved chocolate brown but have shied away from it the last few years and bought lots of gray clothes. You have inspired me to take a look at Brown again. I have to get a new winter coat this year and I like both of those coats you showed. I’ll check them out!
Hi Chris, I think beige, gray tan were such popular colors over the past few years, that there weren’t very many chocolate brown options, which is a shame because I think it’s such a flattering color. So glad you’re considering it! Let me know what you end up with! xo Nipa
Loved this post! I just had to get rid of a pair of faux leather brown leggings and they were worn out! I love the richness of this shade! Youve given great examples in different fabrics and I love velour for the season as well.
Have a great day!
