How To Wear Brown This Fall & Winter
Dark brown is one of fashionโs favorite colors this fall and winter. Whether you call it chocolate, mocha, walnut, coffee, or espresso, or the “new black”, it’s a color you’ll want to wear. Black is too harsh for most skin tones, but dark brown is universally flattering. If you tend to suit warmer colors, choose a brown with hints of orange. If you look better in cooler colors, look for a very deep brown with hints of black.

Colors To Wear With Dark Brown
For high-contrast combinations, pair dark brown with cream, blush, lavender, or light green.
Neutrals like denim, navy, and gray look beautiful with dark brown.
Want a traditional fall look? Wear orange, olive, or tan with dark brown.
If you want to stand out, try hot pink, red, or teal.

Dark Brown With Neutrals
The easiest combinations to pull together are dark brown with other neutrals like white, cream, gray, and beige. If you consider blush and leopard print neutrals, too, then those work too!
My corduroy skirt is an old style but this corduroy mini skirt is similar. If you prefer a midi, take a look at this Faux Leather Midi.

Dark Brown With Blues
Dark brown and blue are on opposite ends of the color spectrum, so they complement one another really well. Try brown with denim, of course, but try light blue, periwinkle, or other soft shades of blue.

If you are looking for dark brown nail polish, try Fringes And Saddles, Don’t Know Jacques, or Dark Chocolate.
Dark Brown With Orange, Red, Or Burgundy
Dark brown also pairs well with the red family, including orange, pink, and burgundy.
Try a burgundy sweater with brown pants. (My short sleeve sweater is sold out, but this mockneck sweater is similar.
Or try a dark brown patterned blazer with a burgundy top.

Here are some beautiful dark brown styles available right now (Fall/Winter 2025/2026)
Brown Fall And Winter Jackets
What’s trending in fall/winter jackets and coats? Tailored wool coats, blazers, bombers, collarless jackets, and lady jackets. Suede, leather, and corduroy look especially gorgeous in dark brown.
For a casual look, try this Barn Jacket. I have it in Moss Brown and wear it in the fall and spring.
This Faux Suede Cropped Trench is affordable and very much on trend.
This Java Rain Jacket would be cute with jeans on a wet fall day.
Dark Brown Sweaters And Sweater Dresses
A cashmere sweater in rich chocolate brown has a luxurious, cozy look. I bought this Cashmere Sweater in Brown Coffee and this Wool and Cashmere Sweater Dress from Nordstrom to wear to fall/winter events. This Cashmere Sweater is similar to mine and is currently available in brown.

A cashmere cardigan is a luxurious addition to your closet, especially when it comes in a rich color like chocolate! Add some sleek brown ankle boots, and you’ll have plenty of options for your other pieces: blue jeans, beige pants, a printed skirt, or black leather pants. If you prefer a wrap, take a look at this affordable cashmere wrap.
Dark Brown Pants And Jeans
This fall, you’ll find dark brown tailored pants, casual pants, and jeans. Try them in wide leg, bootcut, barrel leg or straight leg styles.
Brown Shoes And Handbags
If you’re adding brown clothing to your closet, you might want some dark brown accessories too. Brown leather can look polished and refined, or rugged and laid-back. If you like a polished professional style, look for a glossy finish, snakeskin, or croc-effect leather. Dark brown suede can be dressy or casual, depending on the style.
I have these Waterproof Chelsea Boots that I wear with my jeans and pants, and these Waterproof Knee High Boots that I wear with dresses and skirts. Here are some other gorgeous options in shoes and boots.
You’ll also find plenty of dark brown handbags in leather, faux leather, and suede this fall and winter. What’s trending in 2025/2026? Functional totes (with zippers and pockets), slouchy handbags, baguette bags, and bucket bags. These are some of my favorite styles this year.
Brown Printed Options
If you’re not sure if brown fits into your current closet, start with a print that is a combination of brown and other colors that you wear. Try one of these printed brown pieces with a pair of brown shoes. See whether dark brown works for your personal style.

Great post Nips! I love shades of brown. A rust colored brown is my favorite. Love the brown snake print dress you shared too. Definitely considering that one.

Hi Nipa,
Its great that you offer a color chart. Dark brown is a beautiful fall color andd their are many ways to style it into your wardrobe. I like mixing it with powder blue also.
Hi Nancy, Oh powder blue with brown is another lovely combination! xo Nipa
Great post, with lots of ideas! Iโve always loved chocolate brown but have shied away from it the last few years and bought lots of gray clothes. You have inspired me to take a look at Brown again. I have to get a new winter coat this year and I like both of those coats you showed. Iโll check them out!
Hi Chris, I think beige, gray tan were such popular colors over the past few years, that there weren’t very many chocolate brown options, which is a shame because I think it’s such a flattering color. So glad you’re considering it! Let me know what you end up with! xo Nipa
Loved this post! I just had to get rid of a pair of faux leather brown leggings and they were worn out! I love the richness of this shade! Youve given great examples in different fabrics and I love velour for the season as well.
Have a great day!
