What’s In My Closet For The Transition To Fall 2025

August 29, 2025March 13, 2026 Updated onMarch 13, 2026 Fashion

September is such a beautiful month in Upstate, NY, but the weather can change by the hour. While we’ll still have some hot days, most will be a combination of chilly and warm. Welcome to Transition 2025, the mini-season just before fall. It’s time to let go of some of the summer linens we’ve been wearing for a few months and embrace some cozier pieces like cotton sweaters. Here’s how I’m getting my closet ready for the transition to Fall 2025…

1. Relaxed Jeans

I’m keeping a few pairs of shorts handy for an unexpected warm day, but mostly I have jeans and pants in my closet. I’m wearing the Meg High Waist Ankle Wide Leg Jeans, which are full-length on me as I’m just under 5’4″.

Other jean trends for Transition/Fall 2025: barrel leg jeans, trouser jeans, boocut jeans, and straight leg jeans.

2. Cotton Sweaters

When there’s a chill in the air, but it’s too early for wool sweaters, try a cotton sweater. I’m wearing Sanctuary’s Mix Stitch Cotton Crewneck Sweater in XS (now sold out). This Pointelle Sweater has a similar style.

Other cotton sweaters for Transition/Fall 2025: chunky knits, sweater-vests, and collared cardigans. And while most sweaters are short or cropped, we are starting to see some oversized and longer styles again.

3. Lightweight Short Jackets

For those unpredictable-weather days, I always have a few lightweight jackets in my closet. I just added this Alma Cotton Jacket and this Short Barn Jacket to my collection.

Other jacket trends for Transition: collarless jackets, flight (bomber jackets), and chore jackets. As we get closer to fall, we’ll also see plenty of simple leather and suede jackets.

4. Long-Sleeved Dresses

I’ve mostly seen midi and maxi dresses in stores the past couple of years, but this fall I’m starting to add some long-sleeved shorter-length dresses to my closet. I’m wearing them with ballet flats for now, and knee-high boots later in the fall. I bought this Farm Rio dress during the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, but the sleeves had too much volume for my petite frame, so I returned it, but I bought this

Other dress trends for Transition/Fall 2025: shirtdresses, swing dresses, dark floral prints, and animal prints.

5. Suede Handbag

Suede handbags are going to be a huge trend this fall, and I can’t wait to use my Veronica Beard Leather Bucket Bag from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

Other suede handbag trends to look out for: asymmetrical shapes, East-West (long) bags, and oversized slouchy bags. And don’t forget that Handbag Charm!

6. Sneakers in Color

While I’m still wearing my white and off-white sneakers, I’ve also added a pair of black suede sneakers to my collection.

Black and cream suede sneakers balanced on wood stairs.

Olive, chocolate, and burgundy are also trending colors for sneakers.

7. Ballet Flats

I love wearing ballet flats with dresses, skirts, and cropped pants. I have these Woven Leather Flats (very flexible and comfortable) and these Mary Jane ballet flats that I wear from summer to fall.

Trends in ballet flats: almond-toe and square-toe flats, Mary Jane flats, and a new kind of ballet flat with a V-shape (like the Steve Madden flats below!)

8. The Basics

Of course, I’m keeping my t-shirts, button-up shirts, athleisure, and other basics in my closet for the transition to fall. I also like to take advantage of the end-of-summer sales to refresh my foundation pieces from EBY.

So what am I putting into storage?

  • Summer pieces that I know I’m not going to wear in September, i.e., bathing suits and coverups.
  • Linen shorts and shirts that I’ve worn a lot – putting them away reminds me to wear some of the summer clothes that I neglected!
  • Prints and colors that only seem right for summer, i.e., bright pink, lemon yellow, sea-creature prints.

What do you typically wear for the transition to fall, and are there any trends for Fall 2025 that you are particularly excited about?

Comment BLOG if you'd like to see what I've found. As someone who doesn't like to wear heels most days, I love that ballet flats work with almost every outfit.
