Workout Clothes I’m Wearing In My 50s
Since I work out at home, I hadn’t given much thought to my workout clothes for a long time. But I realized that the workout clothes I bought in my 40s don’t really fit or flatter me, now that I’m in my 50s. My workouts have changed from running and studio yoga to mostly walking and weight-training. So here’s what I’ve been buying and wearing lately…

Leggings & Pants
Most of my workouts are walks on nature trails or at-home weight-training, yoga, and pilates sessions. So I like to have both leggings and looser pants in my closet.
Athleta and Lululemon are two of my go-to brands for leggings and pants because they’re high-quality and don’t fade or shrink. They also offer shorter options, which are a necessity for my 5’4″ frame. I love the Lululemon Align™ collection, which is made in a soft, stretchy, lightweight fabric. I have the mini-flare leggings, which aren’t currently available, but they do have leggings in the same fabric.
I also have Athleta’s Satulation Stash Leggings, which are made in a soft, breathable nylon/LYCRA® blend. They come in 3 different lengths and include Regular, Petite, and Tall sizes.
My latest purchase is these Dance Studio Pants, which I bought for walks, but also for travel. These run smaller than other Lululemon Pants. My friend and I were shopping at the store together, and both had to size up from our usual Lululemon size. (I’m a 4 in most brands, a 6 Short in Lululemon’s other styles, and bought an 8 Short in these). My tank top is this soft Jersey Training Tank and my shoes are these On Cloud Sneakers.

I’ve also been researching organic cotton leggings and pants as I’m hearing so much about plastic and forever chemicals in traditional workout clothes. So far I’ve bought Pact’s On The Go Leggings, which are soft and comfortable, but I wish they had pockets. If you don’t like compression in your leggings, you may like these. They’re under $30! The other organic cotton activewear brand that I am exploring is Mate The Label; their Organic Cotton Stretch Leggings have pockets and a shorter inseam than the Pact ones.
Shorts
Have you ever taken something out of your closet and wondered how on earth you ever wore it? That’s how I felt when I dug up my running shorts. They were too small and too short! I needed new shorts for walking in the summer, and hopefully running in the future. I bought these Lululemon 4″ Shorts and these 3″ Shorts that I’m wearing below. My weighted vest is an older version of this one (mine didn’t come with the pouch). I’m using a 12lb one.

Tanks And Tees
The t-shirt I’m wearing in the photo above is Uniqlo’s Active T-shirt, a very affordable fitted t-shirt that I’m wearing for yoga and pilates.
For summer walks and workouts, I bought this Lululemon tank top to match my Dance Studio pants. If you’re looking for a tank top that covers your belly (and is loose in that area), you might like this soft, jersey one. It’s just the right length to be tucked in or left out.

Hoodies and Jackets
One of my favorite hoodies for cool-weather walks and for travel is this Scuba Full Zip Hoodie. I bought it in navy a few years ago. For a lighter option, I wear my Athleta Salutation Jacket a lot. If you’re looking for organic cotton, you might like Pact’s CloudKnit hoodies. I bought the CloudKnit sweatpants and thought the fabric was wonderful, but unfortunately the sweatpants were too long for me.
Bras
Since I’m mostly doing low-impact workouts, I don’t need high-support sports bras. So I bought this basic Uniqlo Bra, which is soft and stretchy. And then I found the Lululemon Cloud Double Strap Bra in the same bright blue as my pants and tank top, and had to add that to my cart too. Next on my shopping list is an organic cotton bra.

I’m slowly replacing my old compression tights, short shorts, and race t-shirts with softer, more relaxed styles. Tell me, what do you look for in your workout clothes?
