My Simple Over 50 Skincare Routine
You could say I overthink fashion ๐, but you’ll find that I keep other aspects of self-care pretty simple. For years, I used a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen – that’s it! However, now that I’m over 50, I’ve added a few extra steps to help my dry skin. Here are the products I’ve been using over the past year. Most are clean skincare brands, under $50, and easy to use.

Over 50 Skincare: Morning Routine
I hit the snooze button too many times to have a complicated morning routine! Here’s what I do:
1. Cold Water Splash
I don’t wash my face in the mornings, as I have dry skin, but I do splash it with cold water to wake up. I leave it slightly damp when I apply moisturizer.
2. Moisturize
One of my favorite affordable clean brands is cocokind. Their products receive excellent ratings on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database, so if you’re concerned about ingredients in skincare products, you’ll be happy to know that most of cocokind’s products receive a low hazard (1) score.

You can buy their products on their website, at Target, or on Amazon. I use the Resurrection Polypeptide Cream, a light cream that absorbs quickly into my dry skin.
3. Apply Sunscreen
Regardless of the weather, I always apply sunscreen to my face. I’ve tried SO many mineral sunscreens, I’ve lost count. The one I’ve liked best is cocokind’s Daily SPF, which doesn’t leave a white cast or oily film.
Another brand I’ve used and loved is Supergoop! I used their GlowScreen last spring and summer, but if you don’t want the tint, you’ll want their Unseen Sunscreen. If you’re wondering whether Supergoop! products are clean, these sunscreens receive a low-hazard score (2) on EWG’s Skin Deepยฎ Database.
Over 50 Skincare: Nighttime Routine
1. Remove Makeup
Lately, I’ve been wearing makeup every day, so that I can be ready for blog photos whenever the sun decides to cooperate! So, I never go to bed without taking off my makeup. I’ve been using Farmacy’s Green Clean Cleansing Balm, which removes my makeup without leaving my skin dry.
I scoop a small amount into my hand, rub my hands together, and apply it all over my dry skin (for about 30 seconds). Then I wet my hands and massage the balm into my skin again. Finally, I rinse it off.
\
Farmacy has updated its cleansing balm since I bought mine, so they now offer original and fragrance-free formulas. You’ll find Farmacy at Sephora and Ulta Beauty. If you don’t want to commit to a full-sized jar, look for the mini sizes. If you like to double cleanse, there is also a foaming cleanser that you can use after the balm
When I travel, I take some of my cleansing balm in a small container, or these disposable wipes, or these reusable microfiber cloths.

If you buy this set of microfiber cloths, you’ll receive a mesh laundry bag to store them, so that you can throw them in the wash when you get home. I received this set as a gift from the brand, and they also gave me a discount code to share with you: use NIPA20 for 20% off this set.
2. Double Cleanse
The last time I had a facial, my esthetician recommended that I double cleanse. So after removing my makeup, I’ve been using this Daily Cleanser (also a gift from the brand – you can use the code NIPA20 for the cleanser, too!)

3. Apply Serum
I apply serum next, currently this Night Serum. I’d never used retinol before was a bit hesitant, as I thought it might irritate my skin, but this one is so gentle that I had no trouble. (Use my code for this one, as well!)
When I finish this bottle, I am going to use this cocokind serum, which I wanted to try since the moisturizer and sunscreen work so well (also available at Target).
4. Moisturize
A serum delivers active ingredients like antioxidants and retinol, so it’s not a substitute for moisturizer. So I follow up with cocokind’s resurrection polypeptide cream (also available at Target) again.
I’ve used their Texture Smoothing Cream in the past, but found that the polypeptide cream was better for my dry, mature skin. My daughter, who has combination skin, has been using the Texture Smoothing Cream for the past year.
5. Add Eye Cream
And for a little extra hydration, I’ve been using this Sephora Lift & Firm Eye Cream. I wish I could tell you that it has lifted my hooded eyes or made my soft skin tighter, but I can’t. I can tell you that it prevents the skin around my eyes from getting dry.
I’ve also used cocokind’s Revitalizing Eye Cream, which was light and quickly absorbed, but like the Sephora eye cream, I can’t say it made any difference in the way my eyes look.
6. Apply Lip Mask
My lips tend to get really dry, especially in the winter, so I’ve been using this Laneige Lip Mask overnight. (I received a gift set of minis for Christmas last year, and I’ve just started my second tub, so a little goes a long way.)
This product does not score well on the Skin Deepยฎ Database, so if you’re looking for a low-hazard overnight lip mask, try Burt’s Bees Overnight Lip Treatment.
7. Finish With Body Lotion
And I always end my routine with this body lotion and a foot balm. I’m currently using this super affordable (and EWG VERIFIEDยฎ) Unscented Body Lotion, which you’ll find on Amazon (and possibly your local grocery store).

My foot balm is this Magnesium Balm with shea butter and coconut oil. It keeps my feet from getting dry and cracking in the winter, and the magnesium helps me sleep better.
Occasional Treatments
Once a week, I apply this Volcanic Clay Mask. It’s best for normal or oily skin, but I find that if I only use it once a week or so, it doesn’t dry my skin out. It does leave a nice, soft feel to my skin.

A couple of times a week, I use my Solawave Wand. Again, I wish I could tell you that it’s made a world of difference, but I just haven’t done a proper scientific experiment to know. It is soothing, and a nice way to end the evening, though. (You’ll find this wand at Nordstrom and Target).
Does my skincare routine look like yours? I’m curious!

Hi Kate,
I’m so glad you’re a fan too! It has been an amazing resource for me – I’ve used many of the EWG Verified brands and love them! xo Nipa
Thanks Nipa! I really appreciate that you have selected items that score well on the EWG site. I’m going to try some of them!
I tend to keep my routine simple as well
because I use curology and have to worry about other products interacting with it, but the products youโve listed sound great and Iโve been looking for a new maskโIโll have to try the volcanic clay mask you recommended.
Oh, I’ve heard of curology but have never tried it! xo Nipa
