The Most Flattering Jeans Right Now
There are lot of different denim styles right now from skinny jeans (yes, they’re back) to super wide flares. Of all the styles, I think these are the most flattering jeans for women with curves, soft bellies, and hips…

Clean Dark Jeans
After years of cropped jeans with frayed hems and whiskers (those faded lines across the belly area), I’m seeing many more jean styles in solid dark colors. Not only are these styles more versatile, but dark colors tend to make us look slimmer. You’ll find options in espresso, black, and indigo in a variety of styles. You can dress these up for a dinner with a silk or satin blouse, or wear them casually with a cotton sweater.
Soft Bootcut Jeans
Bootcut jeans are slim through the hips and thighs and slightly flared at the bottom. This year, I’m seeing a lot of bootcut jeans in cotton blends that have a softer feel and more stretch than traditional denim. The snug fit around the hips and legs allows you to wear loose, untucked tops or layers without making your outfit heavy or frumpy.
I’m wearing Paige Bootcut Jeans, available in both regular and petite sizes (I’m wearing the 28P), in black. These are 51% rayon / 26% cotton/ 22% polyester / 1% Lycra® spandex, so they feel more like pants than jeans. The petite styles have a 10.5″ rise (mid rise).
Bootcut Jeans / Cutwork Blouse / Snakeskin Boots (similar)
Paige also tends to run long, even in petite sizes. These have a 30″ inseam, a couple of inches longer than most petite brands. If you’re tall, they also have 32″ and 34.5″ lengths in this style.
What’s the difference between bootcut and flared jeans? Bootcut jeans tend to have smaller leg openings than flared jeans, but I don’t think there are any strict guidelines for naming jean styles. When you’re shopping online, take a look at the product or fit details to find out the leg opening, and compare the measurement with jeans that you own and love.
Wide Leg Jeans
Wide leg jeans have been trending for several years now and show no signs of going away. The styles that are popular right now are a subtle wide leg. This loose style is flattering for all body types. Wear wide leg jeans with shorter tops so that you don’t have a lot of volume around your hips.
I’m wearing Paige Leenah Wide Leg Jeans in 28P, which are a little slimmer in the thigh area than the Paige Anessa Wide Leg style that I bought a couple of years ago. Both have a 22.5″ leg opening. I think the Leenah is going to be a bit easier to style with different tops because it doesn’t have as much volume. However, the Anessa does come in 6 lengths, many colors, and a variety of pockets and hems, so they’re a good buy too!
Wide Leg Jeans / Cutwork Top / Ballet Flats
The Leenah is also 51% Rayon / 22% Polyester / 26% Cotton / 1% Lycra, so it also has a softer feel than regular denim.
If you’re looking for mostly cotton wide leg jeans, take a look at J.Crew’s Slim Wide Jean which is made in 99% regenagri®-certified cotton/1% elastane and has a 19.5″ leg opening.
Utility Jeans
Utility details like cargo, patch or porkchop pockets, are popular this year too. These jeans tend to be loose in style, and made in traditonal denim blends (mostly cotton).
I’m wearing an older pair of utility jeans from Banana Republic. The Madewell Reissue Utility Jeans are similar and come in both regular and short lengths, with an 11.5″ rise. While they have a slim openining, the over all cut is loose.
Utility Jeans (Similar) / Drawstring Top / Ballet Flats / Woven Handbag
If you like an even higher rise, the very popular Anthropoloigie Colette Jeans have a 12.25″ rise (and is available in Standard, Tall, Petite, and Plus sizes).
Kut from the Kloth’s Jodi Straight Leg jeans are another option with porkchop pockets.
If you love barrel leg jeans, they are still trending, and often come with utility details like porkchop pockets. The J.Crew Zoe jeans are an option – they are made in 62% regenagri®-certified cotton/38% cotton with an 11.5″ rise.
Slim Jeans
Skinny jeans have made a comeback, but don’t seem to be as popular as they were in the mid-2000s. What I’m seeing is mroe often afre cigarette jeans which are slim jeans that are fairly uniform in width from thigh to hem. If you are wearing a lot of layers on top, like a button down shirt and blazer, slim jeans are a good option to balance your look.
Slim jeans can be ridgid (no stretch) like the MOTHER Rambler jeans or have a little stretch like the Kut From The Kloth Slim Straight Jeans. For a super-stretch jean, take a look at the J.Crew Matchstick Jean in 81% cotton/11% TENCEL™ lyocell/6% elastomultiester/2% elastane.
Flattering Jeans For Petite Women
As a petite woman with curves, jeans are always a bit of a challenge to find. Low-rise jeans, tight jeans and very loose jeans just don’t work for me. If you are petite (5’4″ and under) these styles come in petite or short options.
