How To Wear Icy Blue This Year

Cool, crisp, icy blue is a fashion favorite this year. Here’s how to wear this trending color all year, from warm to cool weather, in casual and dressy outfits…

Trending Color Combinations

Here are some colors that are also trending right now, and pair well with icy blue. You can look at this chart in three ways:

1. If you know your seasonal color palette, the top three on the left are Spring colors, the top three on the right are Summer, the bottom three on the left are Autumn, and the bottom three on the right are Winter.
2. If you like to dress in colors that are traditional for the season (for example, light colors in the summer and dark colors in the winter), you can wear the top half in the warmer months and the bottom half in the cooler ones.
3. Or you can use the entire chart all year, changing up the fabric for the temperature, for example, ecru cashmere in the winter and ecru jeans in the spring.

These are the color combinations that I’m loving this year:

Icy Blue + Gray

While you can certainly wear icy blue with black, I prefer to pair it with gray, which creates a softer look. Try it with charcoal in the winter, and lighter grays in the spring.

Light blue and charcoal are both cool, crisp colors. If you prefer warmer colors, wear icy blue away from your face and pair it with a muted (grayed) shade of brown, green or plum.

Icy Blue + Espresso

Espresso and chocolate have been trending for a few years now and show no signs of going away. Like charcoal, it’s a softer color than black and flattering to most skin tones. If espresso is too dark for you, try chocolate, mocha, or tan. They all offer a warm contrast to blue.

Icy Blue + Olive

Shades of green from soft sage to dark olive are also trending this year. Choose the shade of green that is most flattering to your skin tone. Olive isn’t a color that works for me, so I wear it away from my face, in skirts, pants, and accessories. If it does work for you, try wearing it in a top with icy blue on the bottom.

Icy Blue + Darker Blues

Dark denim and navy are also trending this year and pair beautifully with light blue.

But, if you’re looking for something less predictable, try pairing light blue with cobalt, dark blue, or dark teal.

Icy Blue As A Neutral (Light Wash Denim)

While there’s a lot of talk about dark denim coming back, I’m seeing a lot of light blue denim this spring and summer. And this is how icy blue becomes a neutral. Wear it with the other colors that are trending this year: pink, butter yellow, white, teal, and lavender.

What I Wouldn’t Wear With Icy Blue

There are trending colors that I probably wouldn’t wear with icy blue, unless it was in a print.

Persimmon: This deep shade of orange is also going to be popular this year. It’s a bold look to combine it with light blue, and takes a little finesse to achieve.

Black: While I love black, I think there are more creative combinations for cool blue, like plum, charcoal, navy, and espresso.

Ballet Pink is another trending pastel this year, but there’s something about pink and blue that is a little too cute.
