How To Wear Burgundy This Fall & Winter

October 5, 2024August 7, 2026 Updated onAugust 7, 2026 Fashion

Burgundy evokes a sense of luxury, complexity, and sophistication. Also known as Merlot, Dark Cherry, Oxblood, Maroon, and Garnet, this deep red makes a statement on its own but also pairs well with many other colors. Here’s how to wear burgundy this fall and winter, and a few pieces you may want to add to your closet…

A color chart of colors that pair well with burgundy.

1. Head-To-Toe

Burgundy Dresses & Shoes

A burgundy dress looks sophisticated and elegant. Wear matching shoes or boots for a luxe monochromatic look.

You can also wear burgundy head-to-toe in a long coat and boots. Try this Lauren Ralph Lauren Double-Breasted Wool Blend Coat with Knee High Boots.

2. With Traditional Fall Colors

Deep, rich burgundy pairs well with traditional fall colors like olive, brown, and yellow. I’m wearing a sweater dress with suede boots. Both of these are sold out, but this sweater dress and these mustard suede boots are similar.

3. With Warm Neutrals

Burgundy looks beautiful with warm neutrals like cream, beige, and tan. If these are your colors, pick a warmer shade of burgundy, one that looks more red than purple.

4. With Cool Neutrals

If you prefer cool neutrals like black, navy, white, and gray, those work well with burgundy too!

I’m wearing Clara Sunwoo’s Signature Jacket in Merlot with their Ponte Knit Kick Front Pants (both #gifted by the brand). The jacket is made from an exclusive knit fabric with a sheen of luxurious leather.

And of course, burgundy looks beautiful with dark denim whether it’s your favorite wide leg jeans or a maxi skirt.

5. With Red, Pink, Or Orange

If you want a bolder, more unusual look, try pairing burgundy with red or pink. Not sure how? The easiest way is to find a print that already incorporates those colors. I would have never thought to pair burgundy with red, until I bought this print and thought it was a beautiful combination (currently sold out).

This Reiss Midi Dress pairs burgundy with orange, and this Rails Mini Dress pairs burgundy with bright yellow.

6. With Leopard

Leopard is also trending this fall and winter and pairs beautifully with burgundy.

7. In Accessories

Burgundy accessories like belts, handbags, and scarves add a touch of rich color to simple fall outfits. If you’re not sure if burgundy works in your closet, start with a small accessory.

8. In Jewelry

Looking for burgundy gems? You’ll want to check out these garnet pieces (especially if you were born in January as it’s your birthstone!)

9. In Makeup And Nailpolish

Burgundy lips and nails add instant glamor! And if you have tan skin like I do, you could also try a burgundy blush.

Is Burgundy Right For You?

Burgundy is a combination of red, green, and blue. Depending on the combination, it can be cool and dark, or warmer and red. It may also be deeply saturated or a little faded. If you know your seasonal colors, you probably know which shade works for you. If you don’t, try on burgundy pieces from a few different brands and see what makes your face glow. And when in doubt, opt for a print, bottoms, or accessories – and pair it with a top that is the perfect color for you.

Need a change from midi and maxi skirts? Me too, e Need a change from midi and maxi skirts? Me too, especially because I often have to have them shortened to fit my petite frame.

So I bought this corduroy mini skirt to wear with my knee-high boots. Later in the fall, I'll add tights and a jacket...or swap out the cap sleeve sweater for a long sleeved one.

I always know that I've made a good purchase when I always know that I've made a good purchase when I cut the tags immediately and wear the outfit! (Usually, I think about, try it on again and think some more πŸ˜†)

This @loft dress is one of those good purchases. It's an easy lightweight dress for cool mornings and warm afternoons. And if you're fighting that midlife belly like I am, there's plenty of room without being shapeless.

Okay, I'm a little late to the Adidas party, but i Okay, I'm a little late to the Adidas party, but in my defense, everyone talks about how chic they are, but not how crazy comfy!

I just bought three burgundy ones and then the tan ones too 🀫

How many pairs of sneakers do you have? (I didn't include my older pairs so I'm guessing I have 8 pairs?!)
