How To Wear Burgundy This Fall & Winter
Burgundy evokes a sense of luxury, complexity, and sophistication. Also known as Merlot, Dark Cherry, Oxblood, Maroon, and Garnet, this deep red makes a statement on its own but also pairs well with many other colors. Here’s how to wear burgundy this fall and winter, and a few pieces you may want to add to your closet…

1. Head-To-Toe
Burgundy Dresses & Shoes
For a night out, a burgundy dress looks sophisticated and elegant. Wear matching shoes or boots for a luxe monochromatic look.
If you prefer a casual look, opt for a knit dress with ballet flats.
If you’re looking for Plus sizes, this Twist Front Vent Dress is available in sizes 1X-3X in wine.
Need something for a cocktail or holiday party? This Velvet Faux Wrap Dress is available in Burgundy in sizes 1X-4X. Wear this with either a statement necklace or bold earrings.
Burgundy Athleisure
Looking for new activewear? Athleta’s latest limited edition collection comes in a deep, rich garnet color. Try this Bomber Jacket with joggers or leggings.
You might also like these high-rise joggers and this cropped jacket. Both are available in Spiced Cabernet, a dark, cool shade of burgundy. Wear them with these sneakers in aubergine to complete the look.
If I didn’t already have two Coaster Recover Sweatshirts I would buy another in the Spiced Cabernet color to wear with these buttery soft high-rise leggings. These are the pieces I wear on repeat when I have my 12-hour dance mom duties!
2. With Traditional Fall Colors
Deep, rich burgundy pairs well with traditional fall colors like olive, brown and yellow. I’m wearing a Cotton Wool Mockneck Sweater Dress with suede boots (these Ankle Boots in Toffee are similar).

3. With Warm Neutrals
Burgundy looks beautiful with warm neutrals like cream, beige, and tan. If these are your colors, pick a warmer shade of burgundy, one that looks more red than purple.
If you’re looking for a print, this Bubble-Sleeve Floral Top comes in a pretty burgundy and ivory floral.
4. With Cool Neutrals
If you prefer cool neutrals like black, navy, white, and gray, those work well with burgundy too!
I’m wearing Clara Sunwoo’s Signature Jacket in Merlot with their Ponte Knit Kick Front Pants (both #gifted by the brand). The jacket is made from an exclusive knit fabric with a sheen of luxurious leather.

Need a warm weather look for fall? This slip skirt in Bordeaux And White Floral looks lovely with a white t-shirt or blouse.
And of course, burgundy looks beautiful with dark denim whether it’s your favorite wide leg jeans or a maxi skirt.
5. With Red, Pink, Or Orange
If you want a bolder, more unusual look try pairing burgundy with red or pink. Not sure how? The easiest way is to find a print that already incorporates those colors. I would have never thought to pair burgundy with red, until I bought this print and thought it was a beautiful combination (currently sold out).

This Tie-Neck Mini Dress has a bold red and burgundy floral print.
This Burgundy Leopard Paisley slip dress and these sneakers both boldly combine burgundy and orange.
6. With Leopard
Leopard is also trending this fall and winter and pairs beautifully with burgundy.

7. In Accessories
If you want to experiment with burgundy, start with accessories like bags or belts.
8. In Jewelry
Looking for burgundy gems? You’ll want to check out these garnet pieces (especially if you were born in January as it’s your birthstone!)
This tiny Birthstone Necklace is available in gold vermeil or sterling silver.
Or try burgundy enamel pieces like this bracelet or these earrings.
9. In Makeup And Nailpolish
I’m wearing Olive & June’s Obsessed, which is a dark ruby color.
If you’re looking for a bold burgundy lipstick, take a look at Star Power (cool burgundy) by Kosas.
Is Burgundy Right For You?
Burgundy is a combination of red, green, and blue. Depending on the combination, it can be cool and dark, or warmer and red. It may also be deeply saturated or a little faded. If you know your seasonal colors, you probably know which shade works for you. If you don’t, try on burgundy pieces from a few different brands and see what makes your face glow. And when in doubt, opt for a print, bottoms, or accessories – and pair it with a top that is the perfect color for you.
