Elevate Your Style With A Short-Sleeve Sweater
The short-sleeve sweater is a versatile top that you can wear with both casual and professional outfits. Think of it as an elevated t-shirt with a touch of warmth and texture. Choose a cotton one for a warm day or a cashmere one for a chilly day. Try a collared or a button-front one for extra style elements.
Here are some of my favorite short-sleeve sweaters that are available now, and how I’m wearing mine…

Crew-Neck Short-Sleeve Sweaters

I recently bought Uniqlo’s 100% Merino Wool 3D sweater, which has a ribbed texture and fitted sleeves. I’m wearing the XS, which is a little snug on me, but I wanted to be able to wear it under one of my fitted blazers. It’s not available anymore, and to be honest, it’s not something I would buy again. It’s made without seams, which means that it doesn’t have as much shape as I would like. Here are a few other options that I think would be more flattering:
Short-Sleeve Cardigans
You can wear a short-sleeve cardigan buttoned as a top, or left open over a fitted tank or camisole. Choose from fitted, loose, plain, or embellished styles. This style is often cropped, so wear it with high or mid-rise pants or over a dress if you like to keep your tummy covered. These button-up styles also come in handy for a little shoulder coverage over a sleeveless dress.
Short-Sleeve Polo Sweaters
For a preppy, relaxed look, try a short-sleeve polo sweater over tailored pants or a pencil skirt. You’ll find polo sweaters in ribbed textures, brushed cashmere, cable knit, and pointelle. Choose from puff sleeves, elbow-length sleeves, or basic sleeves.
What To Wear With A Short-Sleeve Sweater
You can wear a short-sleeve sweater with jeans, tailored pants, midi or mini skirts, or even dresses. Try it with jeans for a casual look, a midi skirt for dinner, or tailored pants for work. Add a blazer or cropped jacket to finish your outfit. If your jacket has fitted sleeves, you don’t have to worry about bulk in the arms.
I’m wearing my sweater with brown jeans (this color is currently sold out, but this denim version is available). My skirt is an older Club Monaco style – this Madewell one is similar.
Because my sweater is simple, fitted, and waist-length, I think it would work with just about any bottoms in my closet, from short skirts to loose pants. The ribbed texture is simple enough to wear with prints or other textures.

How To Avoid Looking Frumpy In Short-Sleeve Sweaters
If you don’t want a clingy top, but you’re afraid a loose one will make you look frumpy, you just need a few styling tips! First, choose a top that ends at a narrow part of your body. For me, that’s my waist – but if you’re apple-shaped, it may be just below your belly. Then, choose a bottom that is fitted in the area underneath your sweater, i.e., your waist and hips. Having a lot of fabric underneath your sweater adds unnecessary bulk, which can look frumpy.
To keep your tummy area smooth, you can also try pants with compression, like NYDJ’s Sculpt-Herโข High Waist Bootcut Ponte Pants or the SPANXsculptโข ReDefine High Waist Flare Jeans.
Avoid sweaters that are loose all over – in the body, the sleeves, and the hem. Opt for a loose fit around the bust, but with a fitted hem or sleeves. Or a fitted body with puff sleeves. By the same token, avoid sweaters that are too clingy.
How To Choose The Right Fabric
Sweaters come in a variety of fabrics. Before you buy one, consider:
