A Preview of Fall 2024 Fashion & Beauty
Fall fashion is starting to trickle into stores – if you’ve seen the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, or gone back-to-school shopping, you know! I’ve done both, so here’s a preview of the 2024 fall fashion and beauty items I’ve tried on (plus a few new trends I’m curious about).

Denim
The good news about denim is that there’s a huge variety of styles right now. The bad news is that too many options can be a bit confusing!
So think about your body shape and lifestyle, to figure out what works for you. For example, I’m petite and have a pear-shape, so I know that I need some stretch, a 28″ inseam, and around a 10″ rise to cover my belly button. Since I wear my jeans to work and meetings, I want distress-free dark jeans. That narrows down my choices quite a bit!
These are the Mother Rider Slim Ankle Straight Jeans in size 28. They’re supposed to be cropped but since I’m petite, they’re ankle-length on me. (If you click on the link, you’ll see how differently they fit me compared to the model!) I just ordered the Mid Rise Flare jeans, and will probably keep one of the two pairs.
These are my first pair of Mother jeans, and I have to say, the quality is outstanding. With, denim, I find that you get what you pay for, so it’s worth investing a little more of your budget on a great fit, quality, and style.

I also bought these KUT from the Kloth Ankle Kick Flare jeans from the Nordstrom Sale. (These are a size 4P so they fit the way they’re supposed to on my 5’4″ frame).

Outfit Links: Kick-flare Jeans / Linen Shirt / Sandals
And, I also bought these super stretchy black kick-flare jeans in 4P. Though slimmer jeans are supposedly coming back in style, I like a wider leg opening as it provides some balance to my pear-shaped figure.

Outfit Links: Black Jeans / White T-shirt / Wedge Boots (similar) / Belt

If you’re sorting through your closet and wondering what to keep (and what might be outdated) you’ll be happy to know that most of the styles from the past few years are still popular.
What’s still in style: wide-leg jeans, straight-leg jeans, barrel-leg jeans (wide around the thighs, tapered to the ankle), extra-long flares, kick-flare jeans, denim maxi skirts, and overalls.
What’s trending/new: indigo denim (blue-black), patchwork denim, denim dresses, and the return of skinny jeans (gasp!)
New arrivals:
Outerwear
It’s hard to think about outerwear in the summer, but before too long we’ll be craving warm and cozy again!
What’s still in style: puffers, blazers (especially plaid), pea coats, moto jackets, cropped jackets, and trench coats.
I haven’t bought anything new for this fall yet, but I love this trench coat meets wool coat combination: Double Breasted Wool Blend Coat.
And of course, denim jackets are always in style and perfect for that transition into fall. I have this one (currently on sale with code).
What’s trending/new: Bomber jackets (especially leather), reversible faux fur coats, and coats with built-in wraps or scarves.
On of the most popular items in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (their preview of fall 2024 fashion and beauty) is this Leather Bomber. If it’s sold out in your style, try this Mango one (note that it’s currently on sale on the Mango website, not on sale at Nordstrom).
If you’re looking for a bomber jacket for warmer weather, take a look at this elegant Cotton-Linen Bomber jacket.
Dresses And Skirts
Dresses and skirts are more popular than usual this year, perhaps because of the “refined elegance” (luxurious, feminine looks) trend that emerged in the fall runway shows.
What’s still in style: shirt dresses, pretty florals, denim dresses, sweater dresses, pencil skirts, denim skirts, and midi skirts
This Rails Denim Dress is a part of the 2024 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (fall fashion preview) and is still available in different sizes.
If you’re looking for something new (or something we just haven’t seen in a while) take a look at this skirt-over-trousers style!
What’s trending/new: plaids, animal prints, refined elegant dresses, satin or silk dresses, drop waist, wrap and bubble skirts (hello, 80s!)
Shoes
Most of the fall shoe trends that I’ve seen have been practical and comfortable (yay!)
What’s still in style: ballet flats, Mary Janes, Chelsea boots, lug soles, loafers, knee-high boots, low-profile sneakers.
I bought these navy ballet flats to wear with skirts, pants, and dresses this summer and fall. They’re soft and comfortable and the woven texture makes them a little more special than the average ballet flats.

What’s new (again) this season: harness/moto boots, paper bag boots (see below), studded shoes, pointed-toe shoes, and chunky mules.
I also bought these lug-sole boots to wear in the fall. Chocolate brown has been really popular for the past couple of years and continues into fall.

Looking for weekend sneakers? Designers seem to be loving leopard print again. These Cariuma leopard sneakers are an easy way to add animal prints to your summer and fall outfits.

Handbags
Do you prefer colors or neutrals for your handbags? I have mostly neutrals but every now and then I buy a pop of color. If you’re in the neutral camp, then try a black, ecru, or chocolate brown handbag. If you prefer color, the most popular shades in the fall runway shows were yellow-greens, black cherry (burgundy), and red.
What’s trending/new: barrel bags (cylinder-shaped), box bags, wristlets, and baguette bags (long shoulder bags).
What’s still in style: carry-all bags, bucket bags, oversized totes, satchel bags, and cross-body bags.
Beauty
Fall beauty trends probably deserve their own blog post, but here’s the minimalist’s version of that post!
Complexion
We’ve seen a lot of dewy skin and glass-like skin (both shiny, youthful looks) but this fall we’ll be toning down the shine with more of a pearlescent finish.
I’ve been loving this Supergoop Glowscreen Sunscreen (also available at Sephora) which has a hint of color and a beautiful soft glow finish. If I need more coverage, I use my Triclone Medium Coverage Foundation which has a natural finish.
I just bought this Sigma Soft Coverage Brush Set to add to my Essential Brush for my everyday makeup routine.
Eyes
There are some dramatic eye makeup trends right now like grunge makeup, pink or green eyeliner, and light blue eyeshadow. But if you’re looking for everyday makeup, you’ll be happy to know that the mini cat-eye (a slight flick at the end of your eyeliner) and natural-looking brows are in style.
Lips
If you choose only one new lip color for fall, make it red. Whether it’s bright red or a deep cranberry, red lipstick can take your look from basic to glamorous. This is my favorite Deep Dark Red Lipstick.
This Lip Trio has a pencil, gloss, and lipstick in a classic ruby red. It would make a lovely holiday gift (but you might want to grab it now as it is currently on sale).
What are you most looking forward to in fall fashion and beauty? Leave me a comment to let me know…

I love the jeans and bags you shared.

Hi Nipa,
I’m commenting later at night as I finally got to your blog. I enjoy how comprehensive you are and there are alot of goodies here! I go yo Sephora for a makeup spot, I’ll look for the lipstick then. I really want to try Mother jeans too, but need a longer inseam. Glad you found some great buys!

Hi Jess! Thanks for reading ๐ Mother does have longer lengths in some styles (on their website). xo Nipa
Great post with lots of info! Fall clothes and colors may be my favorite! Iโm glad to hear that all cuts of jeans are in style- that way there is a good fit for all body types but boo on the return of the skinny jean. I love the flare leg for my pear shape too.
Hi Chris! I’m not a fan of skinny jewans either but they do come in handy in the winter when I have to wear snow boots or knee high boots. But in the fall, I love flares, boot-cuts and wide legs as I think they’re a bit more figure friendly. ๐ xo Nipa
I’m seeing so much denim right now! I have mixed feelings about some of it, perhaps because I grew up in the 90s and a lot of it feels “outdated” to me! ๐
I’m loving all the wide leg styles trending in jeans, but am secretly happy that skinnies aren’t completely out.
And all the dresses, skirts, and feminine styles are a big YES from me!
Such a well thought-out and written post, Nipa!
Hi Kristy, I think with so many of us working from home or in offices with relaxed dress codes, denim in even more popular. I’m hoping that means more hemmed jeans – the frayed ones are easier to fit but I wouldn’t weear them in professional settings. Thanks so much for reading and commenting xo Nipa
