After the hectic holiday season, it’s so tempting to spend weekends in pajamas or sweatpants. There also seems to be a lull in fashion inspiration while retailers, influencers and the media recuperate from the end of year festivities. However, before you give up on style, here are 5 suggestions for what to wear in January. If you have gift cards or cash from the holidays, this is also a good time to add a few items to your winter closet at clearance prices…
I know this is not a beauty blog, but I really can’t talk about getting dressed in the winter without mentioning moisturizer! The cold weather, indoor heating, and hot showers can dry out skin significantly at this time of year. I haven’t found one perfect product or brand of moisturizer, but I try to use products that are as natural as possible. Here’s what I’m using right now:
Everyone lotion for my body.
Valentia Organic Rosehip Oil for my face at night. (If you have oily skin, choose an oil-free moisturizer).
MyChelle Replenishing Solar Defense SPF30 for my face and hands during the day.
2. Active Wear
There’s something about January that makes me feel sloppy! Perhaps it’s the post-holiday blues or winter weight gain, or just that we don’t have as many occasions to dress up. If you don’t have to get dressed for work right away, start your day in your workout clothes. First, it will encourage you to move and stretch. Second, it’s a nice little reminder to not overstuff your belly with winter comfort foods. I just bought this Encore Tank from Athleta. It has a nice loose fit for the extra inches that I have gained around my middle this year, but will look just as cute when I lose those inches! The capris are an old style from Lululemon. They have several new cropped pant options online.
Not only am I tempted to pull on those sweatpants but sometimes it feels like I only want to wear grey ones to match the cloudy skies (and my mood)! Make a conscious effort to wear color, any color, but especially red. It’s bold, it’s cheerful, and it’s very much on-trend this season. I bought this dress from L.K. Bennett over the summer when I was in London and wore it several times over the holidays. I love that it is a red-on-black print so it’s bold but not too bright. This
Just because the holidays are over, it doesn’t mean that you can’t wear a little sparkle. At this time of year, I like to be a bit more subtle like in this beaded cardigan from Ann Taylor. Mine is an old style, but you can find an updated version here.
5. Winter Accessories
Winter accessories are heavily discounted right now, so if you don’t have a cashmere scarf or hat, now is the time to buy one to wear for the rest of winter. I bought this cheerful red cashmere beanie from Banana Republic a few years ago. There’s a similar one at Bloomingdales.com right now. Berets are also back in style; inspired by the French, revived by influencers. Try this cashmere one from Bloomingdales or this embellished felt one from Anthropologie.
