How To Style A Long Denim Skirt

Jeans are not my friend. Okay, that’s a bit dramatic, but I do struggle to find ones that fit my somewhat-curvy, in-between-petite-and-regular body. Jeans have to fit around your waist, hips, thighs, calves and have to be the right length for your body. It’s a little easier to find a denim skirt that fits because it just has to hug your waist and hips.

If you’ve been avoiding denim skirts because you find the classic mini style to be too short, then I have good news for you! Who What Wear declared the long denim skirt as a must-have in their post: This Will Be The Most Popular Skirt Trend of 2020. Here are some options you can buy now…

Long Denim Skirt Options Online

My skirt is a midi from Banana Republic’s Tokyo Collection. I don’t see it online right now, but if you watch that page, they sometimes replenish their stock.

$ The Denim Tie-Front Skirt from Talbots is similar color and length to mine, but a little more a-line. You can find this style at Madewell too.

$ If a midi just feels too long for you, then consider a longer pencil skirt like Everlane’s Denim Button-Front Pencil Skirt.

$ If you want the look of denim, but a lighter weight fabric that you can wear in the summer, Loft’s Chambray Tie-Waist Midi Skirt is casual and cute!

What I love about all of these styles is that they have a clean look (they’re not ripped or distressed) which means you can dress them up or down. They work for weekends, errands, casual days, and work from home days. I also like clothes with a little stretch or a looser style, as I’m always moving around!

Body Suit + Denim Skirt + Mules

My favorite look is the streamlined bodysuit and skirt combination. I love this bodysuit from Banana Republic because:

1. It’s pink (so often I find bodysuits in black, white, gray and nude, and I’m craving color!)
2. The wrap isn’t too low (even for my almost petite frame.)
3. The bottom has plenty of coverage (I’m not a fan of the thong bodysuit.)

I usually wear an x-small at Banana Republic, but I sized up to a small so that it wouldn’t be too tight.

Denim Skirt + Puff Sleeve T-Shirt + Flats

If you don’t like bodysuits (I get it, it took me a long time to find one that I liked) then opt for a long-sleeved t-shirt. I’m wearing the Banana Republic Threadsoft Puff-Sleeve T-shirt. In this photo, I took the belt off and left the t-shirt untucked just for a change in look.

Denim Skirt + T-Shirt + Wedge Heels

Since denim goes with almost anything, play around with colors and styles. I tried this v-neck t-shirt and an open-front cardigan with my favorite wedge espadrilles. A fitted scoop neck t-shirt or cropped t-shirt would also look cute! As we get closer to summer, wear this with a tank top and sandals. Later, in the fall, try booties and a cropped sweater.

What Not To Wear With Your Long Skirt

There are so many other options for chic outfits, that I thought it would be more efficient to mention a few things that you probably don’t want to wear with your long skirt!

1. If your skirt has an a-line shape, you won’t want to wear voluminous top (with ruffles, frills, or balloon sleeves.)
2. For a high waisted skirt,
3. If you leave your t-shirt untucked, opt for a cropped or shorter t-shirt. One that hits at your hips might look a little frumpy.
