November 3, 2024January 11, 2026 Updated onJanuary 11, 2026 Fashion

If you live in the country like I do, you probably own a barn jacket or two. But did you know that this utilitarian jacket has recently been seen on the runways at the Prada and Loewe shows? Yes, the humble barn jacket is currently trending! Affordable brands have given this simple style a fashion twist with different fabrics, colors, and shapes. So if you’re looking for casual outerwear, take a look a these barn jacket style options…

The Classic Barn Jacket

The classic barn jacket is a hip-length, boxy jacket with patch pockets. It’s usually made with waxed cotton canvas and has a corduroy collar.

If you want a true classic, then take a look at this L.L.Bean Barn Coat (available in Regular, Petite and Plus) or this Levi’s Barn Coat.

J.Crew’s Broken-in Barn Jacketβ„’ is more fashion-forward with faux leather collar and cuff details.

French Connection Barn Jacket in blue has a clean, simple look and is currently 70% off and still available in most sizes. GAP also has some affordable styles on sale, including this Waxed Canvas Jacket and this Black Barn Jacket.

The Cropped Barn Jacket

If you’re petite, short-waisted, or prefer a cropped style, you might like my Short Barn Jacketβ„’. I’m wearing the mossy brown in a size small (so that I have room for a sweater). It also comeis in a muted purple, black, and ivory. in sizes XXX-Small-3X. It’s a perfect casual third piece for your basic jeans and t-shirt outfit.

I wore this quilted barn jacket so much, that I bought this unlined Leopard Print one too.

The Quilted Barn Jacket

The quilted barn jacket has a polished look – this Barbour Quilted Jacket (also available in Plus Sizes) is a classic example. Aqua makes an affordable version in black and navy. Wear these with jeans or corduroy pants, and you favorite boots. Add a belt and a button down shirt for that classic country chic look.

If you prefer a casual look take a look at this Cropped Quilted Jacket in khaki and brown. And for a warmer and more casual style, try LOFT’s Quilted Puffer Coat.

Differences Between Barn, Field, And Chore Jackets

If you’re wondering what field and chore jackets are, they’re similar to barn jackets but originally had different purposes. Field jackets are military-inspired and typically have gold buttons and a belt. Chore jackets were created for industrial workers, so they weren’t insulated as barn jackets were.

If you’re shopping at a fashion brand, expect these labels to be used interchangeably. Whatever you like to call it, these utilitarian jackets are versatile, classic, and easy to dress up or down.

I’m still wearing my 12-year-old Banana Republic Field jacket!
