3 Simple Outfits With A Denim Jacket

June 8, 2025July 4, 2026 Updated onJuly 4, 2026 Fashion

Denim jackets are staples in my fall and spring outfits, but I also wear them in the summer when the air conditioning is on, or when we’re on vacation by the water. Here are three denim jacket outfits that I wear often, and ways to modify them to create other chic looks.

1. Classic Denim Jacket + Tank + Wide Leg Pants + Chunky Sandals

Fashionipa (Nipa) wearing a denim jacket, black wide leg linen pants, a black and white striped tank top and black sandals.

What I’m Wearing:

  • Bailey Classic Jacket (no longer available but this one is similar)
  • High Rise Wide Leg Linen Pants
  • Ribbed Tank Top (this one is similar)
  • Chunky Slide Sandals

Why It Works:

This outfit is a nice balance of structure (the denim jacket) and softness (the drapey linen pants). The chunky Birkenstocks balance the volume of the wide leg pants, while the ribbed tank keeps the outfit from looking loose all over (i.e., frumpy).

How To Use This Outfit Formula

  • Swap the ribbed tank top for a fitted T-shirt
  • Try printed wide leg pants
  • Wear wedge sandals or espadrilles instead of chunky flats.

2. Fitted Denim Jacket + T-shirt Dress + Flats

Fashionipa (Nipa) wearing a denim jacket, midi t-shirt dress, and Mary Jane ballet flats.

What I’m wearing:

  • Fitted Cropped Denim Jacket (I bought mine in 2021, so I’ve linked a newer version that’s currently available)
  • Midi T-shirt Dress (mine is an older style, so take a look at this printed t-shirt dress)
  • Mary Jane Ballerina Flats

Why it works:

Like my first outfit, the denim jacket adds structure to an otherwise soft outfit (the t-shirt dress). The shorter jacket and the longer dress follow the rule of thirds.

In case you aren’t familiar with the rule of thirds, it’s the idea that 1/3 of your length should be covered by a certain style or color, and the other 2/3 by another. In this case, the denim jacket covers 1/3 of my body while the brown dress and shoes cover the other 2/3.

How To Use This Outfit Formula

  • Swap the casual t-shirt for a stretch linen dress or a jersey dress for a more polished look
  • If you’re buying new ballet flats, take a look at these trending woven leather ones
  • Add a shoulder handbag in a contrasting color to complete your look

3. Classic Denim Jacket + Midi Skirt + Sandals

Fashonipa (Nipa) wearing a denim jacket, white t-shirt, black midi skirt and flat sandals.

What I’m wearing:

  • Bailey Classic Jacket
  • Ribbed Tank Top
  • Tiered Maxi Skirt
  • Chunky Slide Sandals

Why it works:

This skirt is slimmer around the waist and hips, unlike the tiered skirts we’ve seen the past couple of years. So, it doesn’t add a lot of bulk under the hem of the denim jacket.

How To Use This Outfit Formula

  • Try this slimmer Cotton Gauze Skirt or a fresh summer look
  • Wear strappy flats to show off your latest pedicure
  • Find a short-sleeved denim jacket for warm days

Which Denim Jacket Styles Are Trending?

Both of my denim jackets are older styles, but still relevant because they are classic styles. If you already have a classic jacket, try one of these trending styles to update your denim jacket outfits.

  1. Denim Chore Jackets
  2. Short Sleeve Jackets
  3. Shirt Style Jackets
  4. Cropped Jackets

Of course, other denim jackets are currently in style (like peplum jackets), but these are the ones that work best in these outfit formulas.

FAQs About Denim Jackets

Absolutely! You can wear a denim jacket outfits at any age. Choose a style that fits your personality.

The fit of your denim jacket depends on how you want to wear it. My fitted denim jacket is actually a little snug when when I button it up, but I didn’t sie up because I wanted to wear it open . If you plan to wear a heavier layer under your denim jacket, opt for a loose style (you can size up, but make sure the shoukders aren’t too big for you).

Yes, denim is a twill fabric made from cotton. It’s often dyed indigo, but it doesn’t have to be to qualify as denim. So white denim is really denim!

Yes, denim on denim is very popular right now. It takes a little practice to find two denim washes that look good together – the easiest style is two dark denim pieces togeether, or two white pieces.

I’m curious, how many denim jackets do you own? I currently have 6, and I’m thinking about adding a short-sleeved one to my collection!

Comment BLOG if you'd like to see what I've found. As someone who doesn't like to wear heels most days, I love that ballet flats work with almost every outfit.
