Fall Colors 2017

October 25, 2017January 20, 2025 Updated onJanuary 20, 2025 Fashion

It was my first trip to Vermont . ย My husband and I arrived at sunset, had dinner and went to bed early. ย It wasn’t until the morning, that I was able to look around the room in which we were staying. ย There was a lovely abstract painting on the wall in rich colors of gold and red. ย As I rubbed my eyes, I pointed it out to my husband. ย He looked at me, puzzled. ย Then, with a smirk, he said, ย “That’s the window, kid. ย You’re looking at the fall foliage.”

Orange fall leaves against a bright blue sky.

Keep in mind that I spent most of my early life in big cities where most everything was gray! ย Now, on the farm, fall is my favorite time of year because it is so full of color and so much fun to photograph. ย In a few weeks, I’m really going to miss having stray maple leaves fall onto my flat-lays.

In the fashion world, fall colors have been long declared, discussed, and designed. ย  Most fall collections ย are already on sale, so it is the perfect time to start shopping. ย After scanning the fashion shows, trend reports, and retail websites I’ve figured out what I’d like to add to my mostly neutral wardrobe. ย If you’ve already figured out what’s in your closetย , here are some colors, textures and patterns to consider adding.

The Top 7

  1. Red (grenadine)
  2. Plaid
  3. Velvet
  4. Dark Florals
  5. Lace
  6. Sparkle
  7. Fuzzy

You may have already noticed that there is nothing truly unique about this list compared to other fall seasons. ย Here’s fashion’s dirty little secret: trends evolve and fade, but not as quickly as you might think. ย It’s how you wear the trends that makes them unique to the season, and to you.ย

If you purchased the ย top 7 trends today, it might look like this: ย red kitten heel ankle boots, a plaid pantsuit, a velvet camisole, a dark floral silk scarf, ย diamond earrings and an overcoat with a fuzzy texture. ย In my younger days, working in the fashion industry in NYC, I may have worn a number of trends together like this. ย Here in the country, as a mom of three, I need a more casual, practical look so here’s how I’m wearing the trends.

1. Red

gold hoops with red fringe

Red is all over the fashion scene in a bright, bold hue. ย It’s a little jarring for my skin-tone and personality, so I add it in small touches; in prints and accessories. ย These earrings are from the Luck Brand Outlet but you’ll find similar ones in a variety of stores.

2. Plaid

Brown, plaid mini skirt.

Plaids this season are pieced and turned in different directions. ย I already had this skirt from Banana Republic from last year, but they have a different one (alreadyย on sale) this season.

3. Velvet

Grey croc mules with velvet bows

Velvet comes in all shapes and sizes this year, from slip dresses, to ย baseball hats, from handbags to shoes. ย Mine are on the bows of these leather mules, ย as I suspect I’d never be able to keep all velvet shoes clean. ย  These are brand new, from Banana Republic.

4. Dark Florals

Bell sleeve dress in floral print.

My favorite print for fall is a dark floral, and I found this one at Anthropologie a few years ago. ย It is the only dress that I have purchased at full price because it’s almost season-less, can be dressed up or down and has those dreamy bell sleeves.

5. Lace

Cream lace blouse.

This top, also from Banana Republic (no, they have not paid me to be a spokesperson) is a great day-time lace top. ย With its raglan sleeves, lined heavy lace, it works all day long.

6. Sparkle

Silver booties.

The silver boots from the runways are a little too much like my daughter’s glitter shoes, so these are some booties that I’ve been wearing these this fall. ย Any guess when I bought them? ย At least two years ago.

7. Fuzzy

If you do a Google search for “teddy bear coats” you’ll find a number of retailers who have warm fuzzy coats that feel like you’re snuggling with an old stuffed animal. ย This is my version; not quite as voluminous but equally comfortable.

Coming up soon, the Top 7 Details I’m seeing in the world of fashion.

Comment BLOG if you'd like to see what I've found. As someone who doesn't like to wear heels most days, I love that ballet flats work with almost every outfit.

Bur I'm noticing chilly mornings and earlier sunsets, so I know that fall is around the corner. While I don't want to rush these last weeks of summer, I'm pretty excited to see those gorgeous fall colors.

Are you in summer mode or fall mode?
