Bows & Ties

November 14, 2017March 13, 2020 Updated onMarch 13, 2020 Fashion

Mention, “ties” and I think of my old school uniform. For many years, I had to wear a forest green blazer, gray skirt, burgundy necktie and sensible lace-up shoes (yes, I’m cringing as I write).  Say, “bows” and I picture the oversized ribbon hair clips at accessory stores for girls.  Even my fashionista daughter thought they were “too much”.  So how did these two trends end up on my Top 7 list?  They’re all over the fashion scene, sometimes in over-the-top ways, and at other times, done just right.

Bows

You may already have seen my new bow slides from Banana Republic.  They’re an example of my go-to styling trick: when you’d like to wear a trend or color that isn’t perfect for you, save it for accessories, or pieces that you wear away from your face.  In my case, oversized bows overwhelm my petite frame, so I have avoided them in clothes.

The photo below shows a more subtle bow on my  Kate Spade flats (from my local Marshalls store).  These Kate Spade Westgrove flats are newer but much more expensive.   Cole Haan’s  Ocelot Hair Calf loafers are also a sophisticated option. These Louise et Cie Anniston shoes aren’t really leopard print, but they have a similar feel.

Ties

Despite the revival of 80’s trends (shoulder pads, mirrored glasses, embellished denim and wide belts), I’m not sneaking into my husband’s closet to borrow his neckties.  No, the ties, I’m talking about are the knotted and lace-up details which have been in style for  several years now.  Ties and lace-ups will continue into Spring 2018, so if you haven’t already added them to your closet, see below for three easy options.

Options to Buy Now
  1. These lace-up boots from Vince Camuto also covers the over-the-knee boot trend.
  2. This knotted tee from Madewell is comfortable and on sale (at time of post)
  3. If you’re tired of actually tying your lace ups, Anthropologie has a great top for you.

I bought this tie-sleeve t-shirt from Anthropologie a few months ago.  I am avoiding ties on long sleeved shirts for now.  Life is so busy that I’m afraid I’ll end dropping the ends into my soup or getting them caught in a door.  For my farm to fashion life, style needs to be easy.

Think ballet flats are basic? I did too until I sa Think ballet flats are basic? I did too until I saw what's new for fall. High-vamp, lace-up, even pointe-shoe-inspired flats are arriving this fall.

Comment BLOG if you'd like to see what I've found. As someone who doesn't like to wear heels most days, I love that ballet flats work with almost every outfit.

Bur I'm noticing chilly mornings and earlier sunsets, so I know that fall is around the corner. While I don't want to rush these last weeks of summer, I'm pretty excited to see those gorgeous fall colors.

Are you in summer mode or fall mode?
