How To Style A Simple Black Dress For A Special Occasion

Party season used to start with printed invitations sent weeks in advance, including a dress code (usually cocktail attire). Lately, though, we’ve been receiving last-minute electronic invitations with more vague dress codes (“wear whatever makes you comfortable”), which have left me a bit puzzled! So I’ve found some simple black dresses which are easy to dress up or down depending on the event. Here’s my take on how to choose and style a black dress for a special occasion. You can take one suggestion, or mix and match them.

First, Find The Perfect Black Dress For You

Here’s the bad news: black isn’t for everyone. Black is a cool, deep color that isn’t flattering if you have light or warm-toned skin and hair. It can also be harsh on aging skin as black can cast shadows on your face. So if you find that black isn’t your best color, you can apply these suggestions to dark brown.

How To Find The Right Fit

Now that you have your color figured out, let’s find a dress that works for your body and style. Here are a couple of hints for finding the right fit:

1. The size on the label is just a guide. Different brands have different measurements for sizing. For slimmer styles, your usual size may be too clingy for your comfort so you may want to size up.
2. Look at where the seams and darts land on your body. If there’s a seam at the waist, does it land on your waist? If there are darts on the bodice, does the line point to the high point of your bust?
3. Is it too tight or loose? If the fabric lands smoothly over your body, it’s a good fit. If you see any gaping or bunching, it probably isn’t your best fit.
4. Choose a comfortable length and style. As cute as a mini looks, if you spend the evening tugging it down, it’s not the right fit for you. A low neckline can look gorgeous, but not if it makes you self-conscious.
5. Find a style that highlights your favorite features. Have a small waist? Try a fit and flared style. Love your toned arms? Wear a sleeveless or halter style. Want to show off your long legs? Try a mini or a maxi with a slit.
