Elevated Basics: Twist Front Tops

I’m always on the lookout for elevated basics; pieces that you can wear with almost anything but that have an interesting design to them. I love the look of twist front tops and dresses but so many of them are too clingy or revealing, or just meant for working out. So I started searching for figure-friendly tops and dresses with a twist front detail. I also wanted one that could be dressed up or down and didn’t have the typical twist at the hem. Here’s what I found…

Twist Front T-shirts And Tank Tops

This is the Victoria Dream Knit Top from Amour Vert. I love the twist detail at the neck, partly because it is unusual, but also because I can’t quite figure out how they made it! (Ever since my first career in fashion product development, I’ve been a little obsessed with how clothes are made!). The twist at the neck adds a fun detail to a basic outfit, but it’s simple enough to be worn under a jacket or cardigan. And the fabric is super soft!

You can wear the Victoria Dream Knit Top with denim for a casual look, or with a blazer and tailored pants for the office. If you prefer a short sleeve version take look at the Raya Dream Knit T-shirt. The Azure color is my favorite, but I think that all of the colors are perfect for summer and fall.

You may also like Laila Ali’s Drape Front Tank from Nordstrom. It’s available in a beautiful butterfly print for the summer or an animal print that would fit right into your fall wardrobe. The twist is higher up than the hem, so there’s no belly-button-exposing hemline.

If you’re looking for something under $25, Old Navy’s Twist-Front Linen Tank comes in several colors and patterns. My favorite is the Ecru Stripe.

For a more dressy top, take a look at Banana Republic’s Twisted Top. Wear it with your shorts now, or a skirt and cardigan later.

Instead of a twist at the hem or neck, how about a Twisted Sleeve Stretch Knit Top? Balloon sleeves can make your arms look heavier so this is a slimmer alternative for an interesting sleeve detail.

Long Sleeved Twisted Tops

Tired of your basic button-down shirt? How about a crisp twist front shirt, like this one from Cinq À Sept?

Create Your Own Twist Front Look

Want to create a twist-front look with something you already own? Grab a handful of your loose t-shirt, wrap an elastic band around it, and tuck it under. If you haven’t quite mastered the half-tuck, this is an easy alternative.

You can also tie your button-front flannel shirt into a knot and tuck it under (you may need safety pins to hold the knot in place).
