My Favorite 2020 Fashion Color Trends

At the beginning of the year, I found myself wearing a daily “uniform”: gray puffer coat, fleece top, black leggings, and black snow boots. Practical but boring! Now that the warmer months have arrived, I’m ready for a burst of color. So, I’ve been looking at the Pantone Color Trend Reports, watching runway shows, and shopping online for color inspiration. Whether you’re looking for something new or “shopping” in your own closet, read this post for some of my favorite 2020 color trends, as well as some fresh combinations that you might want to try…

Classic Blue, Navy Blue, and Denim

I was beyond excited to see that Pantone chose Classic Blue as the color of the year. Blue is such a versatile, universally flattering color. Blue is also a calming, soothing, uplifting color so it’s a really good option for your home too!

Swap out your black closet staples for something navy, classic blue, or denim.

For a rainy spring, invest in a blue rain jacket. For work, video conferences or a night out try a navy blazer (this one has a pretty detail in the back.) Do you need a more casual look? A denim jacket is always in style. For something new and different, try a denim trench coat or buy a stylish jacket for your favorite pup!

If you are looking for new jeans, then consider a pair of high-rise skinny jeans, bootcut jeans (cropped or full-length), or mom jeans. They’re all back in style this year and flatter most body types.

J.Crew’s Vintage Straight Jean is a roomy, comfortable jean, which works for anyone with a pear or apple-shaped figure. If you prefer skinny jeans, then consider Madewell’s 10″ High-Rise Skinny Crop Jeans in Horne Wash. Light blue is perfect for spring and summer.

You can wear your blue pieces with any other color (think about how denim looks good with everything!)

My favorite combinations are:

Blue and green.

Blue with a pop of yellow or orange.

Dark Green, Kelly, Sage, and Mint:

Though Pantone didn’t emphasize green in its color palettes for this year, it has been a favorite in street fashion and on social media and has become one of the most prominent 2020 color trends.

Dark green or olive can be a “neutral” and is a nice substitute for black and gray.

If you bought any in a camouflage print last year, hang on to it as it will continue to be trendy through 2020. If you don’t already have something in camouflage, take a look at Anthropologie’s Wanderer Cargo Camo Pants or Athleta’s Elation Camo 7/8 Tight. Both are casual and comfortable for walks in the park, weekend errands or hanging out at home.

I love bright greens so I just bought the Kelly green Washable Merino Crew Neck Sweater from Banana Republic (in the flatlay above.). They also have a Pleated Maxi Dress in this gorgeous color.

If kelly green is too bright for you, then there are plenty of soft, faded, and light options like Loft’s Eyelet Hem Slim Pocket Skinny Jeans in Matcha Latte or Gap’s Paperbag Mini Skirt.

Reds, Oranges, And Yellows:

If you love bright, energetic colors, then you’ll find plenty of options in bright red, orange and yellow.

Wear any of these colors in a dress or jumpsuit, or wear them all together in a floral print.

If these colors are too bright for you, then consider a softer butter-yellow like Anthropologie’s Danelle Asymmetrical Tee or Madewell’s Wide-Leg Cropped Jeans.

My favorite combinations:

Golden yellow with gray and white.

Red and white.

Orange and blue.

Pinks

Pink never seems to go out of style, and this year is no exception. Pale pink (like olive) has become another “new neutral” so you’ll find plenty of options online and in-store.

If you have blue undertones in your skin (rosy skin tone, with blue veins on the underside of your wrist), then try a deep pink or cotton candy pink. Banana Republic’s Cocoon Coatigan sweater and Pink Mist Bodysuit are two nice options for spring.

If you have golden undertones in your skin (peachy skin, with greenish veins on the underside of your wrist) then peach and dusty pinks will flatter you. Loft’s Tassled Tie Neck Tunic Sweater and Ruffled Mixed Media Shell in Pink Fizz are in soft, warm pinks.

My favorite combinations are;

Pinks with blue (light pink with dark blue or vice versa)

Pink from head to toe.

Pink with Purple (again mix darks and light colors.)

Cinnamon, Grape, Tan, and Lavender

If you prefer earthy tones, you’ll love cinnamon, grape, and lavender. Madewell, Anthropologie and Free People tend to carry these colors all the time.

I like to wear these colors closer to the fall, but you’ll find plenty of options to wear now like Anthropologie’s Farm Rio Culebra Midi Skirt or Cassandra Midi Dress.

There’s something luxurious about tan accessories, like Staud’s Rey Bag in tan.

If you don’t already have a pair of loafers, take a look at Madewell’s Frances Loafer.

I love wearing these warm, spicy colors together, or with whites and light pinks.
