5 Wardrobe Staples To Buy Now
The end of winter is a really good time to find wardrobe staples that you can wear now through spring. Most coats, sweaters, boots and long-sleeved pieces are marked down, so take advantage of the sales! If it’s cold, rainy or icy on March 20th, you’ll be glad to have these warm pieces in your closet. If you’re expecting sunshine and flowers on the first day of spring, then I’ve picked out some options for you too! Here’s what to buy now so that you’re ready for Spring 2020…
1. A Statement Coat
Traditionally, the trench coat is the coat for spring. But depending on the climate in your part of the world, you might need something heavier or lighter.
For our Upstate New York weather, I need a heavier coat well into April. I bought this J.Crew Chateau Parka last weekend. It’s the perfect blend of casual and refined. It’s also versatile, as you can remove the fur trim for warmer months.

For Spring 2020, try a bright or neutral color. J.Crew.com currently has this parka in a gorgeous blue, sweet lilac, and several neutral colors.
If you live in a warmer climate, you may want a blazer as your outerwear piece. I’ve been looking at J.Crew’s Regent Blazer in wool flannel. I also love the lighter weight Going Out Blazer in Stretch Twill as the collarless style leaves room for silk scarves or statement necklaces.
If your style is more casual, add a raincoat in a bright, spring color. J.Crew’s Perfect Rain Jacket comes in 8 different spring colors and is water-resistant. If you need something waterproof, take a look at the Resolve 2 Jacket from The Northface.
2. Cashmere
You’ll find a lot of cashmere pieces on sale right now (especially in department stores.) Pick a neutral, light or bright color to wear into Spring 2020.
Bloomingdales carries affordable cashmere including this Aqua Crewneck Cashmere Cardigan, and their C By Bloomingdales Open-Front Cashmere Cardigan.
For casual styles, try Everlane’s Crew Cardigan or ReCashmere Cardigan.
Now that I’m wearing my v-neck and scoop neck t-shirts, I like to have a cashmere scarf on hand for colder mornings. My J.Crew Contrast Cashmere Scarf also comes in beige and khaki with pops of neon.

3. Long-Sleeved T-shirts
As we head into spring, swap your sweatshirts and heavier sweaters for long-sleeved cotton t-shirts. Buy at least one with a statement sleeve (to celebrate the end of jacket weather!) Choose from a puff-sleeve, ruched shoulder, or balloon-sleeve.
I’m seeing a lot of cropped t-shirts but you can also find a few longer (i.e. CYA) curved hem ones at Banana Republic.
4. Athletic Wear
Don’t give up on your New Year’s Resolution to stay in shape! If you need a little inspiration, maybe a new workout outfit would do the trick?
I needed some bright athletic wear to wear during my morning run (so that drivers can see me between the huge mounds of snow) and found loads of options on sale. This Uptempo Hoodie Sweatshirt is soft and comfy. I’m wearing it over a base layer now but will switch to a sports bra, as the weather warms up. If you have a daughter, you can buy one in her size too!

If you just need a cover-up after the gym, take a look at the cotton Scuba Hoodie from LuluLemon. It comes in 9 really cute prints and colors!
For bottoms, I love the Elation Tights from Athleta, which you can find on sale in bright colors and prints. If you don’t already have something tie-dyed (still a huge trend this spring) take a look at the Ice Dye leggings.
Banana Republic just released an athletic collection and Everlane just started making leggings, so take a look at those options too!
5. Water-Resistant Shoes
Spring usually brings rain, so be prepared with some water-resistant shoes. my Lucky Brand Bebhina Waterproof Western booties have been so practical, comfortable and chic, that I’m tempted to buy another pair.
I’m also on the lookout for some comfortable slip-on sneakers and am looking at the Somers III Slip-On Sneaker by SรFFT, but if you are looking for something more trendy, opt for a platform heel.
For your dressy leather shoes, consider a waterproof/protection spray.
Other Wardrobe Staples
There are several other wardrobe staples that are just coming into stores now, but I’m holding off on them for sales, and more options. These include:
Jeans
Boot-cut, high-waist, off-white, cropped, and dark skinny jeans are all in style.
Floral Print Blouses
I already have this one and this one, but I am waiting for this one to be marked down.
Skirts
Slip skirts, midi skirts, pleated skirts, and long denim skirts will be popular in the spring, so I’ll keep looking out for those.
What wardrobe staples are you buying right now? Leave me a comment and let me know if I can help you find something you’re looking for!

I live in S. Florida so I love the idea of wearing a blazer as a jacket, I only wear them when i’m wearing a suit. I also love the idea of buying new exercise clothing as a motivation tool for working out.
Thanks, Anne! xo Nipa
I love the idea of picking up some cashmere this time of year. A little luxury to celebrate sieving winter! Great suggestions! Thanks for this!
Hi Carol, I love a good bargain! xo Nipa
I’m a huge fashion disaster, although I’ve gotten better since I signed up for. a few subscription boxes. LOL. I LOVE that JCrew jacket so much!!!!!
Hi Stacey, I took a long break from fashion when my kids were little, and used subscription boxes to jump-start my style again. Now I shop so much, I could probably start my own subscription box!! LOL xo Nipa
Good list dear. A statement coat and water-resistant shoes are must-haves indeed.
