5 Easy Holiday Outfits (Casual To Formal)

December 14, 2024January 12, 2025 Updated onJanuary 12, 2025 Fashion

Too busy to think about what to wear? Here are 5 easy holiday outfits ranging from casual (for your family movie night) to formal (for that holiday semi-formal). I’m featuring red, but you can change that to blue for Hannukah and black, white, and metallic on New Year’s Eve…

This post includes affiliate links, so I may receive a commission when you make a purchase after clicking on these links (at no cost to you). Thank you for supporting Fashionipa.

1. Fleece Hoodie + Flared Pants + Cozy Socks

Wear this for movie night, Christmas morning, holiday baking, game night, shopping, or just a busy day at home.

I’m wearing Athleta’s Unstoppable Fleece-Lined Jacket from last year. It’s no longer available in red, but this L.L. Bean hoodie is similar and available in cranberry, green, and navy.

My flared pants are Athleta’s Ranier bootcut pants which are not currently available (but these are similar).

Instead of slippers (which would quickly become a puppy chew toy), I wear cozy socks all winter long. I always find plenty of options at Old Navy and Target.

Prefer a cropped sweatshirt? This Cropped Fleece Hoodie and this Scuba Half-Zip Pullover would also look cute with flared bottoms.

2. Plaid Shirt + Black Jeans + Statement Belt

Wear this for neighborhood gatherings, casual dinners, brunch, or holiday shopping.

If you’re celebrating Christmas, one of the most classic (and easy) holiday outfits is a red or green plaid shirt and jeans. My plaid flannel shirt is a couple of years old, but still a holiday season favorite. If you don’t already have a plaid shirt, Banana Republic Factory has a classic flannel shirt currently available in red.

I’m wearing mine with my MOTHER mid-rise flare jeans (no longer available).

These have a similar shape, come in Regular and Petite sizes, and are more affordable.

A statement belt is the key to making this outfit look polished. Try a contrasting color, a studded belt, or a metallic one.

3. Lace Dress + Heels + Metallic Handbag

Wear this for a cocktail party, semi-formal event, or date night.

When I bought this lace midi dress, I didn’t have a particular event in mind, but it was just one of those classic dresses that I’d be glad to have in my closet. The best part about this one is that it’s made in a stretchy knit so it’s very comfortable. I’m just under 5’4″ so this is long on me – if you’re taller, it may be more of a midi dress on you.

My dress is currently 40% off and selling out quickly, so here are some other options:

Lace Maxi Dress (note that this one has a shorter slip, but it’s detachable so you can wear your own slip, underneath).

Sequin Lace Dress available in 0X to 5X.

For a less formal event, you can switch the lace dress for a Lace Mock Neck Blouse paired with a maxi skirt or wide-leg pants.

My metallic handbag comes in gold and silver and includes a chain strap when you need to be hands-free.

4. Cropped Jacket + Wool Pants + Ballet Flats

Wear this to dinner, professional holiday events, when it’s too cold for a dress, or when you’re on your feet all night.

My jacket is the Lady Jacket With Sequins which comes in this ruby red and in black and white (perfect for NYE). I’m wearing a small (my usual size) and it fits snugly, so I can only wear a bodysuit or camisole under it. You may want to size up if you want to wear a heavier layer.

My pants are these wool pants. My pointed-toe ballet flats were previously gifted by Sarah Flint.

If you’re rushing from work to a holiday event, you can wear the pants and flats with a button-up shirt, and switch to the jacket before going out.

Here’s another sequin jacket option in black.

Not a fan of sequins? Take a look at this tweed jacket (which comes in black too).

5. Sequin Jacket + Maxi Dress + Heels

Wear this for holiday dinners, cocktail parties, or a New Year’s Eve event.

Here’s that sequin jacket again with my silk maxi dress and some very old heels (I honestly can’t remember when I bought them!)

You can make this look more formal with a structured dress like this Empire Waist Ballgown or less formal with a midi dress. Just choose a dress with a neckline that works with the jacket.

Comment BLOG if you'd like to see what I've found. As someone who doesn't like to wear heels most days, I love that ballet flats work with almost every outfit.

Are you in summer mode or fall mode?
