The Effortlessly Chic Asymmetric Top Trend
The asymmetric top trend elevates your outfits with effortless style. With unique necklines, elegant draping, and unexpected lines, these tops add a sophisticated edge to any outfit. Keep the rest of your outfit simple, these tops are the star of the show…

One-Shoulder Tops
Fitted one-shoulder tank tops and bodysuits have been around for a while. What’s new and interesting this year? Tops with a single sleeve like this Printed Blouse by Mango.
You’ll also see various fall-off-one-shoulder styles that look effortlessly chic. This One-Shoulder Top is an affordable alternative to your basic tank top. It’s made in 65% Tencelยฎ modal and 35% polyester (so it’s soft and machine washable). Wear it with your favorite casual pants, skirt, or shorts.
If you’re looking for 1X-3X sizes, take a look at this sophisticated Maeve Asymmetrical Draped Tank.
Need a long-sleeve top? Try this fitted Sylvan One Shoulder Top. The sculpted neckline is so elegant! This top would look gorgeous with leather (or coated denim) pants or a full skirt.
For a casual vibe, try this 80s-style Off-The-Shoulder Sweatshirt. (More 80s inspiration at the end of this post).
If you want a bold, dramatic option, this Twisted Long Sleeve Top has a cutout back.
Just make sure you have a comfortable, supportive strapless bra. (I have this one).
Asymmetric Necklines
If off-the-shoulder tops aren’t your style, try an asymmetric neckline like this long-sleeve Silky Cotton Twist T-shirt or this Twisted Gathered Top. Both offer plenty of coverage for cool weather or modest style.
This Ann Taylor Asymmetric Neckline Top is simple but striking.
Sheer Details And Cutouts
I’m wearing a Karen Millen top that I bought about 7 years ago. I almost donated it, but realized that it’s a perfect example of the asymmetric top trend. I love that it’s modest but interesting. This Long Sleeve Jersey Mesh top is very similar. I’m wearing it with my MOTHER Weekender Jeans (currently sold out, but these are similar). My belt is my Bryn belt by Able.

If you like a more dramatic look, try this Nolita Mesh Top.
Prefer a subtle contrast? Take a look at this Contrast Knit Top.
For workout wear, try this Athleta With Ease Asymmetrical Top with every small shoulder cutout or this Turtleneck Cutout Top.
Off-Center Buttons
If you’re looking for a shirt or blouse, you’ll find a few unique styles with off-center buttons. I’m wearing Madewell’s Asymmetric Button Up Shirt which is a combination of a buttoned shirt and wrap top. Most regular wrap necklines are too low on my petite frame, so I love that I can button this one up for a more modest look. If you’re taller, (I’m just under 5’4″) this top will fit you even better than it does on me. (It’s a final sale item and selling out quickly, so try it on in-store if you can).

If you love the vest-as-a-top trend, you might like this Asymmetric Button Waistcoat in Birch or this one in Dark Gray Or Blue.
Tops With Asymmetric Hems
Scarf hems a.k.a. shark bite hems which are uneven but symmetric, are out of style now. However, uneven hems created by an asymmetric drape look new and fresh. This Draped Asymmetric T-Shirt is a perfect example.
This Area Drape Sleeveless Top is a subtle, elegant version of the asymmetric top trend. I would wear this with wide-leg trousers for work or a professional event.
This Blue Baubles Asymmetric Shirt is available in 1X-3X as well as XS-XL. It has such a fun geometric print! Wear it with black pants or your favorite jeans.
Do You Already Have The Asymmetric Top Trend In Your Closet?
Not shopping right now? Here are three items you may already have in your closet that are asymmetrical or can be worn that way.
Moto And Biker Jackets
By design, moto and biker jackets have an asymmetric zipper and are currently trending. I’m wearing the Liquid Leather Biker Jacket (previously #gifted by Clara Sunwoo).

Wrap Tops
Though they’re not a huge trend, I’m still seeing wrap tops, coats, and sweaters in stores and online. I probably wouldn’t buy a new wrap top, but will continue to wear what I have.
Side-Tie Or Tie-NeckTops
If you have a side-tie top like this one or a tie-neck top hang onto them, as they are still relevant this year.
Can You Wear A Jacket Over An Asymmetric Top?
Wearing a jacket over your asymmetric top can be tricky, but for certain styles, it can create some interesting looks. Fitted tops are probably the easiest to wear with a jacket – just make sure the jacket is simple. Otherwise, play around with different styles of jackets and tops.
